EVENT RECAP: TOP EMERGING DESIGNERS FROM ACROSS THE NATION LAND IN PHOENIX
Hundreds of fashionistas came out to TONI&GUY Academy in Scottsdale as Phoenix Fashion Week revealed the top emerging designers following a 10-city tour
SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Phoenix Fashion Week hosted the 6th annual ‘Emerging Designer Announcement’ on Friday, June 13th at the stylish TONI&GUY Academy in Scottsdale. This official announcement highlighted the 14 new Emerging Designers with a fashion show, along with a trunk sale by this year’s accessory designers. This year’s amazing lineup of Emerging Designers were discovered following Phoenix Fashion Week’s successful 10 city tour of the United States, including New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas and Phoenix. For the first time ever, 7 of the 14 Emerging Designers competing for ‘Designer of the Year’ are locally based in Phoenix.
The 2013 Phoenix Fashion Week Log In Lounge will be hosted by Cabana Apartment Homes, which means it will be more colorful and stylish than ever before. Known for their daring color schemes and unique retro-vibes, Cabana will bring their style and creativity to the Log In Lounge. Now a staple of all Phoenix Fashion Week events, this year’s Log In Lounge will be larger than ever before offering ample seating and pristine runway views in addition to serving as hub of activity, pampering and swag for bloggers and media.
“The evolution of the Cabana brand design features are strongly influenced by international fashion trends and national and local art and design,” said Cabana Modern Apartment Homes Partner Pat Watts. “Such diverse influences as runway shows in New York and Milan, art installations in Phoenix and San Francisco, vintage fabrics, textures and designs have worked their way into the Cabana design aesthetic. Taking international influences and marrying them to local inspirations has resulted in the unique Cabana look,” she said. “Partnering with Phoenix Fashion Week is a natural fit for the Cabana brand as fashion continues to be a major inspiration for the aesthetic of each of our apartment properties,” Watts said.
The Cabana Log in Lounge offers media, bloggers and designers a place to connect and recharge themselves and their gadgets. Besides serving as a spot to mix and mingle with other bloggers and media, the Cabana Log In Lounge is the Official Host Location for interviews with the designers of Phoenix Fashion Week. The tech hub is designed to operate as an onsite newsroom with charging stations for electronic devices in a prime end-of-the-runway location. Created to be the ultimate media ‘swag suite’, the Cabana Log inLounge will be stocked with snacks, beverages, product samples, gift bags and will also offer complimentary mini-manicures and a braid bar to provide onsite beauty-touch ups in between frenetic note-taking, interviews, story editing, Instagramming, Tweeting and Status Updating.
“As one of the most fashion-forward rental properties in the Southwest, we are thrilled the Cabana brand is bringing its stylish vision to Phoenix Fashion Week,” said Brian Hill, Executive Director for Phoenix Fashion Week. “When walking into any of the Cabana Modern Apartment Homes, it’s obvious how fashion is seamlessly infused into their design, from bright pops of color to quirky vintage touches,” he said.
This year’s high-tech Cabana Log In Lounge will be styled by the company’s award-winning interior design team, Private Label International and outfitted with furnishings from each of the properties. Styled like their funky apartment homes, this space will provide the ultimate place to relax, recharge and connect with others. Cabana’s unique approach to decorating will not only create a relaxing environment but also one full of color and life for anyone craving a little inspiration.

Bri Seeley is uniquely feminine fashion for the inspired woman. Established in 2006, this brand based out of Lacey, Washington was created to enhance the female figure and allow the wearers inner beauty to shine. The styles are contemporary, simple, and classic with intriguing details and high quality fabric. Guests should expect to see designs embodying the designer, Bri Seeley’s contemporary vintage aesthetic. “I typically draw upon nature and history for my design inspiration. The Escape collection showing at PHXFW was specifically designed with a playful spirit and a touch of impulsivity,” Seeley said.
On trend for the season, Envy by Khanh features bold lines, colors and geometric shapes that make the line immediately recognizable. The line is all about simplicity and elegance, and designer Khanh Nguyen’s goal is to design dresses that make women feel confident, attractive, and sexy. This vision will take effect at PHXFW in October, where Khanh’s 12 piece 2013 collection will walk the runway. “My irresistible pieces for women create lust in the opposite sex and envy in the same sex. ‘Make them feel it’ is the tagline for ENVY by Khanh, since the goal is to make other women feel envious of you when you’re wearing one of my dresses.”
Based out of Los Angeles, California, EYE Thread is a luxury designer brand on a mission to give back. Their hopes are to inspire the consumer to think about buying a quality product with a genuine foundation in giving back. “By focusing on the highest quality product possible we thought it only made sense to go by an equally high standard for our practices. We believe that if we can make a positive impact, no matter how small, then weʼve accomplished our goal as a brand. Titled Keepsakes & Heirlooms, we provide products made with handselected materials, and assure each piece is made with integrity, craftsmanship and most importantly, heart.” – Designer Ashleigh Kaspszak
Local designer Natalia Acosta of Phoenix is originally from Mexico and after earning two Fashion Design degrees from Phoenix College, has focused her designing vision on creating unique, one-of-a-kind evening gowns that are all individually designed and hand-sewn. With avant-garde, dramatic runway pieces showing at Phoenix Fashion Week, guests should except to take in red carpet gowns meant to see and be seen in. “The the biggest stage for fashion is in the state of Arizona. The Italia Rocks Couture customer is a very confident, elegant and sexy woman. My inspiration when designing this collection is the female figure, and vibrant colors that complement this.”
Los Angeles, California based JHaus is an American made premium denim line inspired by designer Jlynn Hausman’s American-Midwest roots. Being a farmer’s daughter and a small town girl, Jlynn wanted to bring a piece of the country into the city. Creating a high quality product that incorporates her strong roots into the aesthetic was her goal. Great denim should be a staple in any fashionista’s wardrobe, but it can be difficult to find the perfect fit. That is, until JHaus. “Denim is difficult and a very tough business. We have a less is more concept so there is not a lot of embellishment on our jeans. We spent a year perfecting the fits and washes to ensure a premium product. JHaus is the only emerging designer that will be showcasing denim.”
Living Dreams is a lifestyle streetwear clothing brand “inspired by those who follow and live out their dreams”. They offer bold colors on relaxing designs to t-shirts, tank tops, and other fine products for both men and women. Living Dreams believes we all have a dream inside ourselves and when that dream becomes a reality through passion, hard work, and belief in ourselves, that dream turns into a reality, hence the name Living Dreams! The mission of Living Dreams is to spread this message of encouraging others to be “living dreams” through clothing as the canvas to tell the story. “I wanted to ultimately try to create a brand that lets people “escape” and let themselves dream again about what moves them. I am not just trying to create a trendy brand, but one that last decades,” said designer Michael Poulos.
Ofra traveled throughout Europe and Latin America and her broad experiences are the culmination of what we see in her collections. OfraStyle’s latest collection is convertible clothing for women, casual by day, contemporary by night. The collection includes pieces that can be worn 2-3 different ways. They are very versatile and with a few adjustments can be worn as poolside wear, comfortable casual wear, yoga pants, or elegant evening wear. These versatile garments are extremely soft, complimentary to the body and made from beautiful custom made fabrics with a contemporary style.
This St. Louis designer was born with a creative vision and has been designing for nearly all his life. This menswear designer is unique in that he views menswear in a completely new way. He loves mixing colors and prints that are unconventional, but believes that at the end of the day its all about individualism – so the customer can separate the prints and wear them as conservatively as they would like. “Paulie Gibson is inspired by the juxtaposition between masculine and feminine. I’m really inspired by womens fashion. I’m also inspired by people. I’m a very social person and as I meet new people something clicks and I start to create clothing for them in my head – what I’d like to see them in.”
Samantha Patterson creates fashionable modestwear for women, appropriate for any professional, religious, or everyday setting, and no one should have to forgo style to dress this way. Despite the assumptions that some may make about modestwear, Flagstaff-based Patterson has proven that with extra design elements, these subtle statement pieces are taken to the next level. “I love putting creativity in a box. I believe that when an artist applies parameters to his/her work–modest guidelines in my case–it yields even more innovative ideas. I use construction techniques, fabric embellishments, and other accents to compose truly original designs with classic silhouettes.”
As another local designer based out of Tucson, Brooke Reyes is a self-taught designer, who has created a standout line for “women with remarkable taste.” With the drama of many of her runway garments, it’s no surprise that Reyes’ inspiration is the theater and everything that entails. “The woman who wears my clothes desires notoriety. Like in theater, costumes have a way of evoking an era and feeling into the actor. I want my clothes to inject a feeling of confidence, strength, and sex appeal, into my ideal client. My inspiration derives from my days as a thespian. I often take inspiration from theatric, historic and literary characters and bring them into the modern world with my design.”
Co-founders and designers Julie Cruz and Roshena Chadha have created a unique line of versatile shawls and cover-ups meant for the everyday woman, with a convertible shawl that can be worn 15+ ways. They offer practical fashion without compromising on style, with fashionable formulas for multiple looks that can transform an outfit from casual to dressy, from day to night. “We are largely inspired by the fabrics that we find and by elements of other styles and trends that we see. Our inspiration also comes from our fans, who love to get creative with their Shawls and come up with amazing new ways to style them! The possibilities are endless!”
Every since this St. Louis-based designer debuted her first line in the spring of 2009, the brand has been consistently growing since. Her design aesthetic is clear as soon as you see one of her garments, with a bold, strong look that is still sophisticated and chic. It really is about creating a lifestyle. “My number one inspiration is music, which was my first love. From there, it’s about location and building our visual of who our woman is each season. Location plays a big part as well, traveling and adventure. Where would she go?, what would she do?, what would she take with her?…these are all questions we ask ourselves each season to create our story,” said designer Suzanne Lay.

Today our company is carrying this legacy on. We are designing some of the best denim apparel on the planet, expanding into other deluxe casual clothing lines and will continue to support the breast cancer research as well as various other philanthropic causes. Just as the three threads of our trademark Lifeline design the mission of our company is based on: Faith, Hope, and Love.”
Look of Line: “Sophisticated Effortless Urban Lifestyle”
Desired Audience Response: “Feel they can wear as Lifestyle vs. Occasion… mix and match to create different looks that you can wear all the time. (ie: Elegant Slumming Jacket with jeans and boots)”
Look of Line: “The look of my line is wearable sexy / elegant / flowy / abundant / dramatic and cohesive in the sense that most pieces are interchangeable and can transition seamlessly from day to evening or weekend.”

Designer Beginnings: “We aren’t just designers. Blaque Label is a team headed by a creative director that pulls inspiration from all things evolutionary to life. A beautiful meal or a fierce shoe can inspire the look of any season.”
Why PHXFW?: “Blaque Label has been blessed with growth during a stale economy. We believe that PFW was there with us from the start so we wanted to support our supporters and create a sense of fashion unity.”
Article by Lauren Pfingstag for Phoenix Fashion Week
For the 2nd night at Talking Stick Resort, Phoenix Fashion Week is featuring trendy apparel on the runway, sure to be seen in the stores in the coming months. The established designers shows will feature Lady Gaga favorite Alana Hale, Black Russian Label, Blaque Market and many more!
Read on for an insider glimpse into these designers’ minds and what guests should expect to see during fashion week!
Look of your line: “Our line takes inspiration from many things – the lines and spirit of classic dance; the vintage silhouettes of the 20s, 50s and 60s- but with an edgy, contemporary twist; and the simplicity and of my own New England background and style. I’m a preppy at heart. But the most important look is how the bride shines in each gown. That’s my favorite look- when a woman puts on the gown and it just pops- that’s what it’s all about.”
Audience Response: “We’re hoping the audience can see the beauty of the designs and the way gorgeous fabric enhances that beauty. We hope everyone is touched with a sense of romance and understands how a wedding gown can just shine on a bride. When I see my gown on a woman, I’m just thrilled and I hope the audiences gets as excited as I do.”
Look of Line: “Modern Vintage. Our parent company is “Wicked Quick”, which is speed inspired. “Vintage Speed” is the sub-label for all of our vintage inspired looks. Carroll Shelby’s Cobra brand had the perfect history and imagery for us to tell an inspiring story. We stayed true to the dominant styles that the racing team wore then in the 60’s and reinterpreted them for today’s fit.”
Why PHXFW?: “We were introduced by Chris Detert from our PR Agency American Rebel. This event is ideal for brand exposure. We see it as a great opportunity to tell our story locally and nationally. The connections, meetings and images from this event will help us to further push our PR campaign.”
Designer Beginnings: “I studied graphic design at Art Center College of Design, California. And I was amongst golfers who did not buy golf labels because they seemed disconnected from fashion and trend. Two years ago I was charged with a mission! A mission to bring fresh ideas to golf and make modern golf apparel that meet the expectation of younger generation of golfers, and to make that truly unique and exclusive, that only a small brand has a luxury to make. Having a background in graphic design is essential not only while designing clothes, but to build the brand as a whole, which needs cohesive design from clothes, websites, hangtags, catalogues, even to YouTube videos. All creative decisions I make comes from graphic design foundation.”
Why PHXFW?: “Of course it’s the enormous exposure. I love being talked about! Then it’s the fashion show. It’s a huge reward for me. Clothes are on the models, music’s blaring, cameras are flashing, people are watching. Just the way how clothes are meant to be presented! If that doesn’t give a designer some serious goose bumps, i don’t know what will!”
Designer Beginnings: “I started sketching and planning my future as a designer from elementary school- yes, i’m serious. I’ve always had the ambition to create and attended FIDM in Los Angeles and Paris for schooling, interned and worked as an assistant designer for a few LA-based clothing lines for about a year gaining experience, then decided to branch out on my own. A bit over-ambitious as I jumped into the industry blindly, but it has been a great success thus-far and couldn’t imagine myself not doing this.”
Why PHXFW?: “I was lucky to meet Francis, the founder of Fashion Business Inc., as I was starting my company a few years ago. FBI is an organization that focuses on guiding, educating and mentoring fashion industry entrepreneurs. Throughout the past few years as a member of FBI, Francis has coached me and helped my vision become an operative reality. She offered for FBI to sponsor me in showing my Spring collection in Phoenix and I’m so grateful and excited to be a part of the Phoenix Fashion Week team.”
Look of Line: “Black Russian Label’s Collection three, is an artistic interpretation of “my” America from an immigrant, multi-cultural perspective. The colors, textures and lines are all inspired by the Native American, African American, Asian American and Hispanic American cultures that all call the U.S. Home. Beautiful tans reminiscent of basket weaves, rich lavenders pulled from the traditional Folkloric dancer’s costumes and intricate leather textured trim inspired by braided hairstyles all pay homage to their unique heritage. Trekking Across the USA is a celebration of the significant role that they have each played in cultivating American History.”
Audience Response: “I am hoping that each audience member see’s their America represented and celebrated in this collection. In addiiton, I hope they see the juxtaposition and interplay of soft and hard, light and weighthed and fun and fashion that I depict in Collection three.”

fashionistas in the valley. We’re very excited to be on board and looking forward to this week!”
Designer Beginnings: “My background is in architecture. I have a BS in Architecture from Ohio State and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. My training as an architect has lent itself well to designing fashion. I have a great eye for spotting trends while staying true to the sophisticated, classic look of my line. I pay meticulous attention to the details of the garment construction while ensuring a cohesive look to the collection. When I couldn’t find great fitting swimwear after my mastectomy and reconstruction, I decided to create it. Veronica Brett swimwear has taken off and is now being embraced by all women (breast surgery or not) for it’s beautiful styles and fantastic fit. “
Why PHXFW?: “The response to the recent feature in October Harper’s BAZAAR has been phenomenal. Building on the success of the line in New York City I wanted to bring the Veronica Brett swimwear collection to the Southwest, where there are so many stylish women who swim year-round. I am thrilled to be here as part of Phoenix Fashion Week showing the Spring/Summer 2012 collection here.”
