Educational Seminars Give Fashion Insight at Phoenix Fashion Week 2011

Expert Mercedes Gonzalez of NYC speaks in her popular educational seminar

Fashion can be a competitive industry. Every year, Phoenix Fashion Week strives to give fashion enthusiasts insight into the fashion industry by offering educational seminars. At this year’s fashion week, held on October 6-8 at Talking Stick Resort, Phoenix Fashion Week continued educating the fashion community with a “Business of Fashion” seminar series.

“Without understanding the business side of the industry, you have no chance of success,” said Liz Riley, Director of Education  forPhoenix Fashion Week. “By offering the seminars and workshops we have the chance to give anyone interested in learning about it the ability to hear about it first hand from those who have found success.”
During each day of fashion week, various fashion experts shared their experiences in the industry and covered topics including the business of fashion, styling, marketing, starting a fashion line, and personal branding. For the first time, this year, the education seminars featured speakers who addressed the importance of social media, online communication and sales.
Three workshops were held Thursday-Saturday during fashion week and about fifty people attended each seminar. A variety of individuals interested in the fashion industry attended the seminars, but according to Riley, a large percentage of the audience consisted of students from high schools, trade schools, universities and community colleges. Some attendees also included industry professionals interested in learning more about specific areas of fashion. Some educators were also in attendance without students. Their purpose was to enhance their understanding of specific areas of the industry to share with, and better prepare their students for a career in fashion.
“Our attendees come from all over the state, and attend for different reasons, but they all love fashion,” Riley said.
Phoenix Fashion Week’s education series gives students, professionals and other fashion enthusiasts the opportunity to look deeper into the industry. Each workshop offers insight into specialized areas of fashion.
“Our goal is to grow the industry here in Arizona. There is so much talent here and so much passion for fashion,” Riley said. “We bring in speakers from places such as New York and Los Angeles… places which are considered  fashion capitals. Many of these attendees might never have the opportunity to meet these people and hear their information. Hopefully, they learn something or try something they might not have previously considered.”
