Coming to the valley this Friday, May 20th, is a fashionable event that will offer more than just fun. Project Ethos and Vitaminwater Zero are hosting a “Flavor Fashionista
Challenge” where five local designers will have the opportunity to compete against one another to win a prize valued at $3,000.
Designers Shantidas Contu-Owen, Jennyvi Dizon, Tiffe Fermaint, MongKieu Tran, and Rebecca Turley, will be showing their garments based on a particular Vitaminwater Zero “flavor” that each has chosen. The flavors are: Drive, GoGo, Glow, XXX, and Rhythm. The winner of this challenge will be determined that night by the audience text messaging their favorite design.
With this challenge, Project Ethos is creating an opportunity for the local designers to get involved and showcase their own talent.
“I hope the event will inspire people to step out of their comfort zones and get proactive about fashion,” said Contu-Owen. “Project Ethos is here to shake it up and promote some diversity not only in fashion, but in Arizona’s atmosphere as a whole. I would most definitely welcome it as a more frequent event.”
“As much as I want to win, I look forward to networking with people and seeing the fans who come to support me,” said Dizon. “These shows give me the positive feedback that I need to keep going as a designer.”
Fermaint explained that the challenge is showing more of an interest in innovative designers, giving them a challenge that really brings out the creativity. “I think we’ll have some amazing stuff to show for it,” she said. “Also, having a big sponsor backing this event shows others that our fashion community is something to invest in.”
Besides a night of excitement, full of opportunities, Tran said she is looking forward to seeing her work come to life on the runway. She hopes this event will give Arizona’s fashion scene a stronger voice. She said, “There are talented designers here and described them as hidden treasures with passion.”
For Turley, she is not just competing in the challenge, but will also be showcasing her fall collection of Nostalgic Boutique for the first time to the public. Project Ethos, she believes, might help bring more awareness of local artists and designers to people who do not necessarily go to Fashion Week. “We are reaching out to a different and wider demographic,” she said.
Not only is there going to be a heated runway show, collections from Frederick’s of Hollywood Swim, Cardiwrap by Kymaro and Nostalgic Boutique will also be featured, along with various musical performances and an open art gallery. This is a 21 and over event that will be held at Axis Radius from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The venue will be transformed specifically for the event and will not be the usual nightclub scene. Come channeling your classiest cocktail attire and get ready to have an enjoyable night full of fashion, music, and art!
