What is Fashion Rocks MIM?

Throughout history and across the world, fashion and music have always shared a connection. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 31st, Phoenix Fashion Week will highlight that relationship when it celebrates global fashion and music at Fashion Rocks MIM (Musical Instrument Museum).

During Phoenix Fashion Week in October 2010, Russell Goldstein, a fashion week sponsor and supporter of MIM, suggested that Brian Hill, Executive Director of Phoenix Fashion Week, host a fashion event at MIM. Wanting to expose MIM to a fashionista base and connect the concepts of fashion and music, Hill and the Phoenix Fashion Week team members welcomed the idea. So, back in December, Phoenix Fashion Week team members brainstormed different concepts to connect global fashion and music.

During one of those brainstorming sessions, Phoenix Fashion Week Operations Director, Brenna Moses, thought the event would be the perfect opportunity to showcase successful local stylists.

“Phoenix Fashion Week has always wanted to work with successful stylists around town, I thought this would be a great event where we could bring in these stylists and allow them to have full creative control over the show,” Moses said.

During Fashion Rocks MIM, four stylists will work with international designers to piece together a runway show consisting of music, accessories, and styling that reflect the culture of each designer’s birth country.

Stylist Jai Anderson will style Fender, The Collection representing the USA. Knowing that Anderson had worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years, Hill asked if she would be interested in styling at Fashion Rocks MIM.

“Fashion is music and music is fashion; they both inspire each other,” Anderson said. “You can look back and see how fashion evolved over the course of the ages along with the music.”

Representing the image of rock-n-roll, Fender apparel is working with Anderson to create a ‘through the ages’ period look.

“Fashion Rocks MIM is an exciting opportunity for consumers to experience a different kind of runway scene inspired by both music and fashion,” Fender Product Manager Shay Graffius said. “Fender has touched and transformed music worldwide and in nearly every genre: rock ‘n’ roll, country and western, jazz, rhythm and blues and many others.”

Styling for Black Russian Label, Jill Laine will represent Africa and Russia. Laine is the founder of Jill Laine Style where she teaches Secrets of Style workshops.

“My part in Fashion Rocks MIM will be to offer a unique experience, something that isn’t typical of Arizona fashion and style, that will make people think and expand their typical viewpoint of what is possible,” Laine said.

During her runway show, designer Joanna de’Shay, owner of Black Russian Label, believes her collection, Global Trekker, will take the audience to a faraway and exotic place.

“My collection is about a well-traveled woman who travels around the world collecting beautiful things along the way,” de’Shay said. “You will see interesting textures and accessories presented in an innovative way.”

Brian Swan of Right Hand Man Image Consulting will represent Bulgaria while styling for Galina Couture. Swan hopes to help set Fashion Rocks MIM apart from other fashion shows.

“I want to teach people about all the different types of fashion throughout the world that are available to them,” Swan said.

Connecting to the Fashion Rocks MIM theme of global fashion and music, designer Galina Mihalva of Galina Couture plans to offer a collection with cross-cultural elements.

“I think my collection will be in balance and harmony with the museum settings,” Mihalva said.

Paired with Mariska, Shannon Campbell’s styling will represent the culture of Hungary. Campbell plans to use her experience as a freelance wardrobe stylist to offer a creative collection to the audience.

“At Fashion Rocks MIM, I just don’t want to take clothes off the rack and put them on the model and say ok, they are styled,” Campbell said. “I am an artist, so the model is my canvas and the look I style, I want it to be a piece of artwork!”

Designer Maria Janossy of the line Mariska looks forward to the theme of global fashion and music because it gives her the opportunity to highlight elements of the Hungarian culture.

“Fashion Rocks MIM finally gives us an opportunity to put the clothes in the cultural context that inspired them, so guests can have a multi-sensory cultural experience,” Janossy said.

A team of five to six people will work together for each designer’s show. The head stylist and designer pair create the entire look and discuss what the models wear. Ambassadors of the styling team for Phoenix Fashion Week will finalize the models’ looks with hair styling by Dolce Salon and Spa, as well as makeup application and accessories selection  to highlight each of the looks. Working with DJ Q, Joshua Quintero, the stylists will find an authentic sound to represent their designer’s culture.

“The music will be related to the theme of global music and fashion by selecting tracks that are from the countries that are represented that night,” Quintero said. “We will then cut, edit and remix them to fit the needs of a fashion show.”

Every day for the past two weeks, six different teams from Phoenix Fashion Week have been working on Fashion Rocks MIM to some degree. They Style Team makes sure collections look well on the runway, the Operations Team talks to vendors and sponsors, the Design and Buyer Team works with the featured designers, the Media Team covers the event from all angles and the Education Team invites educators and students from Arizona fashion programs to the event to show them what Phoenix Fashion Week is about.

“Everything is different about this event; the fact that it is outside in such an intricate landscape meant we had to be really creative on how the runway will be set up. We aren’t going with the traditional runway and it’s going to be a bit of a surprise,” Moses said.

Besides a fashion show, the first 100 attendees will receive free “swag’ bags, and a free preview tour of MIM Target Gallery’s American Sabor exhibit, free admission to the after party at Blue Martini and a live performance by Fender artist and runway model Nik West.

“We want to continue to be fashion leaders in the Southwest and come up with concepts no one has done before,” Hill said. “MIM is a great, intimate setting for Fashion Rocks and this event will definitely be talked about.”
