2011 Oscar Fashions: Hits and Misses on the Red Carpet

2011 Oscar Fashions: Hits and Misses on the Red Carpet

Article by Lauren Pfingstag for Phoenix Fashion Week

Every awards season, celebrity style and fashions are scrutinized and placed on best and worst dressed lists. Whether exuding expected classic Hollywood glamour, such as Michelle Williams’ saffron hued Vera Wang dress or taking risks with more unexpected ensembles, such as Bjork’s infamous swan-shaped Marjan Pejoski dress, the red carpet at the Oscars has always been a must see for fashionistas everywhere. As Tim Gunn said, the red carpet is “the runway to end all runways”. This year’s Academy Awards were no different, filled with Hollywood glam and thankfully, few mishaps, with red being the most spotted color on the also red, carpet.

Mila Kunis looked feminine and goddess like in her lavender lace Elie Saab Couture gown, showing off her amazing skin tone and features.

Jennifer Lawrence kept her style simple and classic in a red Calvin Klein Collection dress.

Glamorous yet avant garde, Cate Blanchett’s pearl and crystal encrusted Givenchy Couture gown made an impression on the red carpet. Pops of neon color were the perfect unexpected touch.

Anne Hatheway exuded confidence and classic Hollywood glam in an archival red Valentino gown, and Tiffany jewelry.Hilary Swank’s silver Gucci Premiere gown with ombre ostrich feather train was both incredibly flattering and feminine, a perfect choice for the red carpet.

Pregnant leading lady Natalie Portman glowed in her signature color in Rodarte.

Melissa Leo’s Marc Bouwer dress was all kinds of wrong. From the slit up the front to the high collar and heaviness of the look, this was a red carpet mishap.

Virginia Madsen’s feathered Romona Keveza dress was not only unflattering, but the skirt had no movement and sadly resembled carpet. The curly updo was also a poor styling choice.

  1. Great article. I had not seen Virginia Madsen’s dress. Hmmmm, interesting choice.

Have you noticed how Hilary Swank has been wearing more feminine, ” girly ” dresses on the Red Carpet lately ?

Absolutely LOVED Mila Kunis in Elie Saab! The dress moved and fell beautifully. Effortless!
