Shamini: A Design Label to Watch

Up and coming local designer, Shamini Shanmugam is fresh from LA’s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), and is already a creative design force within the valley.

A native Phoenician, she began working with Phoenix Fashion Week on the designer and buyer team alongside fashion director, Brian Hill upon graduation. After gaining insight to both create a successful fashion line and pair it with reputable business skills, Shanmugam created her own clothing line, Shamini.

Shanmugam describes Shamini’s style to be “classy, elegant and sexy at the same time,” while being “very wearable for women … for all types of occasions.” Each piece is highlighted with delicate, feminine detailing.

Inspired by the likes of high fashion houses, Lanvin and Valentino, Shanmugam also finds continuous inspiration in the random perks of everyday life, from hair accessories to how the fabric of her bedspread hangs. She keeps a booklet in her purse to jot down new ideas to incorporate into her designs.

As this young designer makes her imprint on the industry, Shanmugam continues to raise the bar high for herself and Shamini. With her first fashion show already underway, she envisions herself designing for men, kids and bridal in order to make her line available to everyone. Her ultimate goal is to have her own haute couture house in Paris.

The Shamini fall womenswear collection features everything from sportswear to eveningwear. This year, Shanmugam will showcase her work for the first time at Phoenix Fashion Week.

You will be able to meet Shamini Shanmugam and experience her collection on the runway during Phoenix Fashion Week, October 7th – 9th, 2010.
